THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU START YOUR BATHROOM RENOVATION

Bathrooms are one of the most important rooms in a house, and need to be designed well.  So often the design of bathrooms is not given much consideration. Many people focus on the décor, while neglecting the functional design.

When you are renovating a bathroom, it is important to consider not only the finishes, ie tiles, fittings etc, but how the existing setout of the bathroom works for you and your family.

I find that so many people look at their existing bathroom and can’t think past their original setout.  Although moving plumbing can add an extra cost to a bathroom renovation, if it makes the bathroom flow better and uses the space in a better way, it is sometimes worth the investment of moving things around.  In a lot of cases, it is not as expensive as you may fear.

You may feel you need more space in the bathroom and you may be able to achieve that by using space from an adjacent room to make the bathroom bigger. Sometimes that is not always justified - size does not always matter, as long as there is a functional design.  You have to consider the users of the bathroom, and whether you have enough storage so that there is minimal clutter. It can be an expensive exercise and it is important to get it right, before the contractors start.  Having an organised design and plan, will save misunderstandings later.

Choose items well. There are a lot of Chinese copies on the market, well priced but of inferior quality. You need to purchase items that are reputable brands and that you know will last the distance.  It is better to spend a bit more money now than having to replacing items like tapware, baths and vanities 3 – 5 years down the track.  Doing your research well or having your Designer advise you, can save time and money now and in the future.
